Presentation
The Groupe Plateforme is composed of engineers from IPSL laboratories linked to the IPSL Climate Modeling Center (IPSL-CMC). Participation in this group is on a voluntary basis, participants do not represent all IPSL-CMC engineers, but only a part of them.
The groupe Plateforme has its roots in the ESCI group, created by Olivier Marti (LSCE) and Marie-Alice Foujols (IPSL) in the mid-2000s when Pascale Braconnot (LSCE) was in charge of the Pôle de modélisation (formerly known as IPSL-CMC). The aim of this group is to bring together engineers from the various IPSL laboratories on a regular basis, in order to pool their expertise and facilitate the development of the IPSL-CMC model, its associated configurations, and the tools linked to the simulation production and post-processing environment.
The work carried out by this group enables the tools used by the components of the IPSL-CMC model to be pooled, whether in the context of the global model, forced configurations or regional models. The group’s objective is to facilitate the work of IPSL-CMC engineers and researchers. This is the driving force behind the engineers’ commitment to the group.
At present, the group is made up of some fifteen engineers who meet regularly, and an extended group of some thirty engineers who exchange information on a channel dedicated to the Groupe Plateforme.
Position with IPSL-CMC
Group members come from IPSL labs (LOCEAN, LATMOS, LMD, LSCE and IPSL fédération) and external labs (IGE).
Our mission
The Groupe Plateforme ‘s mission is to enable users of IPSL-CMC’s global and regional models to run simulations on supercomputers at national and local computing centers.
This mission is linked to the operation of the IPSL-CMC computing chain. This chain is made up of several building blocks which, once assembled, enable simulations to be set up, run and post-processed on supercomputers. This chain can be described as follows:
- The modipsl tool for the installation phase of components and tools
- Configurations for compiling and setting up simulations
- A multi-site repository of input data required for the calculation chain
- The libIGCM tool for simulation calculation and post-processing
The supercomputers used in 2025 are hosted by the national computing centers of the CEA (TGCC), CNRS (IDRIS) and MESR (CINES), and the local computing centers of the IPSL mesocenter and LSCE.
How it works
The people in charge of the Platform group are : Arnaud Caubel (LSCE), Anne Cozic (LSCE) and Josefine Ghattas (IPSL). This responsibility involves the tasks of leading, organizing and representing the group at the CS-restreint of IPSL-CMC.
The actual main missions are divided by projects as follows:
- CMIP7 model and workflow preparation: all Groupe Plateforme members.
- Rewriting our calculation chain to improve its workflow post-CMIP7: Chloé Azria (IPSL/LATMOS), Lola Falletti (LATMOS), Nicolas Lebas (LOCEAN) and Laurent Fairhead (LMD).
- Integration of C-ESM-EP (visualisation tool) in libIGCM: Stéphane Sénési (service provider), Lola Falletti (LATMOS) + Jérôme Servonnat (LSCE).
- Trusting (continuous integration tool): Thibaut Lurton (IPSL), Josefine Ghattas (IPSL)
- Documentation about IPSL-CMC running environment: all Groupe Plateforme members.
- Annual training courses in IPSL-CMC running environment: Lola Falletti (LATMOS) and Nicolas Lebas (LOCEAN) in charge + Groupe Plateforme.
- Links with Computing Centers:
- TGCC: Arnaud Caubel (LSCE), Anne Cozic (LSCE)
- IDRIS: Romain Pennel (LMD), Sébastien Nguyen (LSCE)
- Link with IPSL Climactions group: Antoine Bierjon (IPSL).
